It is a new chamber version of the full-length opera by the internationally known Latvian composer Arturas Maskats. Opera diva Sonora Vaice (soprano) will play the title role in the love story of Latvian cultural legend Valentina Freimanes, who is also the director of the upcoming show.
“The themes dealt with in my opera “Valentina” – the dramatic twists and turns of Latvian history, the moral responsibility of people before society, their family and the country, protecting the ideals of democracy – are becoming more and more relevant even today, probably even more important than ten years ago, when, based on reality, outstanding personality in the life story of Valentina Freiman, I created this work. I had the happiness and honor to know Valentina personally, to be inspired by her ideals and views on a dignified life. She was a real renaissance person with an enormous wealth of spirit, encyclopedic knowledge and intelligence of the soul. That is why very I am glad that we will think about Valentine again, watching a new musical and stage version of this work”, says composer Arturs Maskats.
The world premiere of the composer’s first opera “Valentina” took place on December 5, 2014. The libretto of the opera was created by Arturs Maskats and the poet Liana Langa based on Valentina Freiman’s autobiographical novel “Goodbye, Atlantida!” (2010) motifs. After taking over the presidency of the Council of the European Union, the opera “Valentina” was included in the public diplomacy and culture program of Latvia.
Opera singer Sonora Vaice (soprano), Gidons Grīnbergs (violin), Inita Āboliņa (accordion) and Māris Žagars (piano) will take part in the new production. Director Sonora Vaice, choreographer Ieva Kemler, costume designer Antra Hanna Elert (“Cinnamon”), multimedia artist set designer Ineta Sipunova, tap dance trainer consultant Māris Pūris, make-up artist Liāna Repule, lighting designer Ivars Vacers, video filming assistants Adams Vaicis and Marks Fridbergs , producer Agija Ozoliņa-Kozlovska.
The production is created with the co-financing of the State Cultural Capital Fund and the Riga City Council, the costumes are provided by the Riga Cinema Studio.
In autumn, the show will also be available in several Latvian cities.
