GridHEALTH.id – Parkinson’s disease (PD) has been around for a long time. In the early 19th century, James Parkinson published “An Essay on the Shaking Palsy,” which described the features of an unnamed neurological condition.
With more work being done on the condition, it came to be called PD, after the aforementioned British surgeon.
PD is a movement disorder and is a common chronic degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. It mostly affects the elderly causing mobility and locomotion problems.
Dr Pradeep Mahajan, Regenerative Medicine Researcher, StemRx Bioscience Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Navi Mumbai in Mumbai, India says, “PD is a neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects dopamine-producing neurons in a specific area of the brain called the substantia nigra.
This disease occurs when nerve cells (neurons) die in an area of the brain. which controls movement. Sometimes, there may be improper function of the nerve cells. Dysfunctional/dead neurons produce less dopamine, which causes movement-related problems.”
There are other chemical mediators in the brain, such as norepinephrine, which control functions such as heart rate and blood pressure.
These mediators can also be lost in PD, and can be the reason for fatigue, an irregular or sudden drop in blood pressure, impaired movement of food through the digestive tract, and other symptoms.”
The risk of developing PD increases with age and has been reported in 1% of people over the age of 65.
“However, we are now looking at cases of PD at a young age, where the disease occurs before age 40. This accounts for 3-5% of all cases of PD. Individuals as young as 21 years of age or younger may be affected by juvenile and young-onset forms of PD.”
