Ahmedabad ∙ Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother, Heera Ben (99), has died. Heera Ben, who had been under treatment at the United Nations Mehta Institute of Cardiology since Wednesday, breathed her last at 3.30am yesterday. Her body was then taken to the residence of her son Pankaj Modi in Raisen village of Gandhinagar. Cremation was done at Gandhinagar Crematorium at 9.30am. Narendra Modi and his brothers performed the last rites.
The Prime Minister arrived from Delhi early in the morning and offered prayers at Amma’s feet. Then Manchal carried the mother’s body along with his brothers and carried it in the van. He also traveled in the same van to the cremation.
After tweeting that 100 years of great travel ended with the death of his mother, the Prime Minister then took action in official events. He had to go to Bengal to inaugurate the Calcutta Metro, Howrah-New Jalpaigudi Vande Bharat Express, etc. He canceled the trip and performed the ceremony via video conference at Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, former Prime Ministers Vijay Rupani, Shankarsinh Vaghela, industrialist Gautam Adani and many others attended the funeral. Heera Ben was born on 18 June 1923 at Mehsana in North Gujarat. Her husband was the late Damodardas Moolchand Modi. Narendra Modi is the third of 6 children.
