The leaders of the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Britain affirmed their support for Israel and its right to defend itself, but also called on it to adhere to international humanitarian law and protect civilians.
In a joint statement issued after a telephone meeting called for by US President Joe Biden, the leaders also welcomed the release of two hostages and called for the immediate release of all detainees.
The White House said in a statement that Biden spoke to the leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany and Italy, after discussions he held separately with Pope Francis and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He added, “The leaders reaffirmed their support for Israel and its right to defend itself against terrorism and called for adherence to international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians.”
The statement indicated that the leaders also addressed the issue of their citizens trapped in this war between Israel and Hamas, “especially those who wish to leave Gaza.”
The White House statement said Western leaders expressed their commitment to coordination “to ensure sustainable and safe access to food, water, medical care, and other assistance needed to meet humanitarian needs.”
Western leaders also pledged close diplomatic coordination “to prevent the spread of the conflict, maintain stability in the Middle East, and work toward a political solution and lasting peace.”
The White House said that in addition to Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak participated in the phone discussions.
