“World Human Milk Donation Day: Encouraging and Celebrating Community Donations”

This year, with the motto A small gesture can feed a big dream, donate breast milk, The Province will carry out various activities in hospitals to encourage and inform the community in general about the importance of donating human milk.

Today, Friday May 19, the World Human Milk Donation Day is celebrated. This day arose during the V Brazilian Congress of Human Milk Banks and the Ibero-American Congress of Human Milk Banks, which took place from September 28 to 30, 2010 in Brasilia.

The Ministry of Health, Social Development and Sports, from the Human Milk Network (RLHM), in commemoration of this date, seeks to promote, encourage and inform the community in general about the importance of donating human milk. Also, recognize and thank all mothers who donate or have donated human milk.

Within this framework, different activities will be carried out, such as:

Ramón Carrillo Hospital, Breastfeeding Centers and Human Milk Collection Centers (CLM/CRLH)

Participation in Cycle of Workshops for Families accompanying responsible parenting. Myths about Breastfeeding. Requirements to be a human milk donor.

Tribute to regular donor mothers of the CRLH 8.

Invitation and recruitment of new volunteer mothers in the formal donation process: anamnesis, filling out the form, signing the informed consent, carrying out laboratory studies.

Throughout the week, together with the health team, in the Maternity ward, awareness activities will be carried out for pregnant and postpartum women hospitalized so that they know the importance of donation and thus, in the future, be probable donors and/or information multipliers.

Today a recognition will be given to mothers who currently have their babies hospitalized in Neonatology and at the same time have become human milk donors.

Human Milk Banks

Human Milk Banks are a fundamental strategy that allows promoting breastfeeding by guaranteeing certified-quality pasteurized human milk to premature infants or neonates who require it. They make sense if they are part of a society that supports and promotes breastfeeding, since in order to have donor mothers, breastfeeding must be promoted and a well-established and committed nucleus of mothers who breastfeed their children must be created.

Mendoza, since 2011, has the operation of the Human Milk Bank (BLH) at the Lagomaggiore Hospital. It is one of the ten banks that exist in the country.

Other public and private healthcare institutions in Mendoza join with their Breastfeeding Centers and Human Milk Collection Centers (CLM/CRLH). The objective is to be able to feed newborns and infants hospitalized in their Neonatology and Pediatric services with their own mother’s milk when they cannot be breastfed directly, as in the case of premature infants, post-surgical patients, and also to collect human milk. and donate it to BLH.
