A special meeting called “preparation for X disease” is scheduled for January 17. World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Brazilian Health Minister Nizia Trindade and other healthcare professionals will participate in the meeting.
“In light of new warnings from the World Health Organization that an unknown ‘disease X’ could cause 20 times more deaths than the coronavirus pandemic, what new efforts are needed to prepare healthcare systems for the many challenges ahead?” the meeting announcement said.
The World Economic Forum will be held in Davos from January 15 to 19.
“Disease X” is a theoretically unknown disease that could potentially cause a worldwide epidemic. The term was included in the WHO list of priority diseases in 2018 with the aim of speeding up investigations of the pathogen that could cause a new pandemic.
According to Anthony Fauci, head of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the letter “X” in the name stands for “surprise”.
In 2020, the WHO announced that the first “X pathogen” should be fully recognized as the SARS-cov-2 coronavirus, which caused the coronavirus pandemic, The Moscow Times reports.
