The Secretary General of the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized the importance of preparing for disease X expressing hope that by May this year, countries will reach a global pandemic agreement to deal with this one “common enemy”.
“The agreement can bring together all the experience, all the challenges we have faced and all the solutions in one,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, AFP reported.
By stating that the term “X”, an unknown disease, was used for the first time in 2018, Gebreyesus noted that there are unknown things that can happen and that it is all “a matter of when, not if”.
“We must not remain unprepared,” Ghebreyesus said during a panel discussion titled “Preparing for Disease X.”
Touching on the importance of research and development as well as health infrastructure and workforce to be prepared for Disease X, he emphasized that primary healthcare is critical, which the world realized during the Covid-19 pandemic.
