World Health Organization and UNICEF Express Concern over Spread of Infectious Diseases in Gaza

On Friday, the World Health Organization renewed its concern about the increasing spread of infectious diseases in Gaza, and the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, said in a post on the “X” platform: “Hospitals are barely functioning. Infectious diseases are widespread and spreading.” “Rapidly overcrowded shelters… and Gaza is a public health disaster in the making.”

In an interview with CNN, UNICEF spokeswoman Tess Ingram said: “We at UNICEF are very concerned about this spread of the disease, because children are the most vulnerable in any community to the spread of diseases.”

“We are seeing very high numbers of diarrhea cases,” Ingram added. “Right now, diarrhea is the second biggest killer of children under five worldwide. One of the dangerous things about diarrhea is that it can be made worse by malnutrition.”

She continued: “We see children not getting enough food, children not getting enough clean water, children getting sick from these diseases like diarrhea. Together this creates a very serious picture for child health, and we are concerned about children dying due to the exacerbation of these problems as well as of continuous air strikes.
