The great Greek musician and composer Vangelis Papatanasiou died at the age of 79 late Tuesday, May 17, Kathimerini reported.

He is one of the most important Greek composers with international recognition, and his music was heard even in space in 2001, in the NASA mission “2001 Odyssey to Mars”.

Vangelis Papatanasiou or simply Vangelis, as he became known abroad, has a multifaceted career that lasted 5 decades. From his first steps with bands in the 60’s, stands out the one called “The Child of Aphrodite”, which he made with Demis Roussos and created the reference album for progressive – “666”.

In the mid-1970s, he left the band to settle in London and embark on a solo career, which, among many other products, led to incredible soundtracks. “Blade Runner”, “Alexander” and “El Greco” are some of the films for which Papatanasiou wrote music, and “Chariots of Fire” won him an Oscar in 1982.

He also writes music for theater. In 1983, together with Michalis Kakogianis, he staged Medea.
