Many of them came to be tested today at the Administrative Court of Saint-Denis. “I have experienced results that are a little less encouraging than these. I am very reassured”, explains Florence Dorval, clerk at the Saint-Denis Judicial Court.
Florence is one of the many officials who came to be tested today. A nurse will check his blood sugar, cholesterol level and blood pressure. In a few minutes the diagnosis is made.
This operation aims to detect the factors of cardiovascular disease, in particular diabetes, which affects 35% of people over 65 in Reunion.
“Generally, diabetes is detected in people between 50 and 55 years old. But the idea is to be able to detect it upstream”, explains Marina Molin-Orru, general director of UROPS, the union’s compulsory health prevention scheme.
This screening operation is taking place in 60 administrations. 50 to 60,000 civil servants are affected across the island.
In a latest report the Regional Health Agency revealed several data on the subject of diabetes in Reunion. Particularly concerning the nutritional behavior of Reunion Islanders. “Risk factors favoring the appearance and development of diabetes are very present within the Reunion population, in particular nutritional behaviors far from recommendations.”, explains the ARS. Thus, physical activity can reduce the occurrence of type two diabetes by 30 to 50%, but nearly one in two Reunion Islanders is overweight, and obesity affects 16% of the population aged 15 and more in Reunion. In addition, 91% of Reunion Islanders say they eat less than five fruits or vegetables per day and 14% of the population say they have no physical activity.
- 35% of people over 65 are affected by diabetes in Reunion Island
- In total, 10% of Reunion Islanders are affected by diabetes
- 2 in 10 pregnant women develop diabetes during pregnancy, increasing the risk of developing diabetes later
- 1 in 3 diabetics are unaware of their illness.
