World Diabetes Day: History, Impact, and Prevention Tips

November 14- World Diabetes Day was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to the threat of increasing diabetes worldwide.
For a long time, people did not have the opportunity or the means to fight this disease. The diagnosis of “diabetes” did not leave the patient any hope not only for recovery, but also for life: without insulin, this hormone that ensures the absorption of glucose by the tissues, the sick body could not exist and was destined to disappear. But there was a breakthrough that saved the lives of millions of people.
Since 2007, World Diabetes Day has been organized under the auspices of the UN. November 14 was chosen to perpetuate the services of F. Banting, born on November 14, 1891, who studied the internal secretion of the pancreas and introduced insulin into therapy in October 1922.
Insulin was discovered in 1921 by Dr. Nicolae Paulescu and it meant the miracle of saving an enormous number of human lives in the last 80 years.
World Diabetes Day is celebrated worldwide by members of the 200 associations of the International Diabetes Federation in over 160 countries and is celebrated by all UN member states.
Diabetes mellitus causes damage to the blood vessels of the heart, brain, limbs, kidneys, retina, which leads to the development of myocardial infarction, stroke, gangrene, blindness and so on.
The World Health Organization predicts that deaths from diabetes will increase by more than 50% in the next 10 years unless urgent action is taken. Today, diabetes is the fourth leading cause of premature death. Every 10-15 years, the total number of patients doubles.
