“Like over countries over seas, tomorrow moves on forever …” this is how the world day of prayer wanders over the world on the first Friday in March. This year women from Vanuatu have written the order of worship and are inviting them. In more than 120 countries people will join in this prayer, including here in Bremen. There is a great worldwide bond that moves me in the World Prayer Day services. But this bond goes beyond prayer. “Pray informed – act praying” is the central theme of the World Day of Prayer. By listening to the people in the host country with an open heart, we allow ourselves to be drawn into the bond of solidarity. We listen to the needs and hopes of women. In Vanuatu they are particularly affected by climate change, although they themselves live in harmony with nature. I recognize how the world is networked and how our actions here in Bremen can have global effects. I am concerned that my CO2 emissions here in Bremen are also contributing to global warming and thus to the plight of the people in Vanuatu.
In celebrating the World Day of Prayer, I am integrated into this bond of global community and solidarity, especially because I let the climate catastrophe come close to me through the women in Vanuatu.
At the end of the day, the World Prayer Day service, traditionally the song “The day is up” and its second stanza: “As over countries, over seas, the tomorrow moves on forever, there is always a song in your honor, your praise from which the shadow flees “. We are invited to join in here.
