Croatian football club captain Luka Modrič wants to continue his career as a representative. He had promised this after the winning match for bronze at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar against Morocco (2:1).
The 37-year-old midfielder is determined to play in the Nations League final next summer. In the final tournament, Croatia will appear in the company of Spain, Italy and the Netherlands.
“I don’t know if I will play until EC in Germany in 2024. I like the national team, I feel happy. I still think I can play at a high level and I want to reach at least the Nations League. Then he will have more time to think about EURO. Now I have to go step by step” he said according to the DPA agency after Croatia’s last match at the World Cup in Qatar.
The Croatians made their way into the top four of the World Cup for the second time in a row. “Finally we return to Croatia as winners. We have shown that we cannot be seen as the ‘dark horse of the tournament’, but as a football powerhouse.” added the Real Madrid player in an interview for Croatian television HRT.
Luka Modrič’s performance was also praised by coach Zlatko Dalič, who hopes the record holder for international caps will play until 2024: “He is our captain, the big boss. He played fantastic in this tournament. Although he is 37, he played like a 20-year-old. He is our leader and everyone follows him. This trophy is for him. There are those who he thinks this is the end of him, but I think he will stay in the national team for a long time.”
