Mbappé thus surpassed even Argentine star Lionel Messi, who also scored twice in the final but only managed seven goals in the tournament. Prior to the final, both were top scorers with five goals each.

Mbappé also set a final record. The Frenchman, who previously scored in the 2018 World Cup final, is now the first player ever to score four goals in a final. In 2018 he had meanwhile scored 4: 1 against Croatia (final score: 4: 2).
