A second consecutive World Cup without Italy
To everyone’s surprise, Italy missed the boat at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Expected for its big comeback four years later, the Squadra Azzurra will once again shine by its absence. Arriving second in Pool C in qualifying, Italy failed to seize the second chance in the playoffs. Against North Macedonia, the Italians lost by a goal to nil. 2018 and 2022, no World Cup for Italy, which has therefore not participated in the biggest planetary event for eight years.
Italy, an impressive record in the competition
Italy has taken part in 18 of the 21st editions of the FIFA World Cup. She won it four times, lost two finals and got a bronze medal. Not entered for the first-ever World Cup in 1930, Italy won the trophy in their first two appearances. In 1934 in Uruguay then in 1938 in France. In 1982 in Spain then in 2006 in Germany, Italy added two trophies to its fine collection. But for a fifth star, Italy, reigning European champions, will have to wait until 2026.
