The “Biennale for Current Photography” is currently visiting six museums and art associations in Heidelberg, Ludwigshafen and Mannheim. Your organizers like to call it the “largest curated photo festival” in Germany. A curator is responsible for all exhibitions. This year it is the Briton John Campany, who has also published a lot in German, and calls himself a big fan of German photo theory.

David Campany – curator of the Biennale for Current Photography
Sam Contis
Campany turns press photos in the Heidelberger Kunstverein into wall-filling works, amazingly beautiful and of surreal charm. In addition, original finds from picture archives of local newspapers are surprising, such as Christo’s first building covering.
There are also alphabetically sorted keywords from the press photo archive. They result in the absurd construction plan of the world view of media – or Dada poetry. Instead of quick responses from visitors to this flood of images, Campany, with John Cage, wishes for “his own reaction”. Quite a challenging task.
