The fight for the title in Formula E is heating up. With the New York City E-Prix, the electric series is entering the home stretch of its 2022 season, after all, the race on the “Big Apple” is already the third to last race weekend of the year. In our big race preview you can read how the title candidates are preparing for the renewed heat and what other challenges the teams and drivers are facing.

Formula E has been a guest in the cosmopolitan city on the US east coast for five years now. Only in 2020 was there no New York City E-Prix in the midst of the corona pandemic. Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Techeetah) was twice the champion of the electric series on the circuit in the Brooklyn district. The Frenchman hopes this history could bode well. After all, the title aspirant is still waiting for his first win of the current season.

City-Country-River

Formula E is the first FIA racing series to organize a race in New York City. The E-Prix takes place in the “Red Hook” ferry terminal in the borough of Brooklyn, one of the liveliest “boroughs” in the southeast of the 8.3 million metropolis.

The name Red Hook comes from the reddish clay of the soil and the shape of the peninsula. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, new housing was created here for workers in the port industry, but these have been migrating to other parts of the city since the 1960s. In the 1990s, the district was notorious for drug crime, which has since declined significantly thanks to social projects.

route | Agility & responsiveness put to the test

The Formula E track in New York is characterized by a colorful mix of different curves. The lap starts with a demanding complex where the drivers have to get the apexes of several right-hand bends before their cars’ acceleration torque is required on a long back straight.

Turns 6/7 offer one of the best overtaking opportunities on the lap, but the potential for accidents is particularly high in the narrow chicane. A second chicane awaits the drivers in turns 12/13 before they turn through the high-speed left-hand bend (T14) back onto the start/finish straight. As usual, the attack zone is not far from the edge of the harbor in turn 10.

rearview mirror | What has happened since the Marrakech E-Prix

After the season finale in Seoul, he will leave the series and share his Mahindra cockpit.

Featuring some of the biggest K-Pop artists in the world. Qualifying Groups | Overview for the New York City E-Prix

In Formula E, qualifying takes place in two stages: group stage and knockout stage. For Group Qualifying, the field is initially split in half, with all odd-ranked drivers (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, etc.) in Group A and even-ranked drivers in Group B.

Temperatures could rise to up to 33 degrees Celsius over the course of the weekend. It should stay dry on all three days of the event. Due to the outside conditions, not only the energy, but also the temperature management of the batteries should again be a key to success.

Forecast | competition at eye level

With the Formula E title decider approaching, and ahead of the New York City E-Prix, it remains unclear which of the top four drivers arguably has the best chance of winning the world championship. After his race win in Morocco, Edoardo Mortara (Venturi) leads the drivers’ standings, but Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Techeetah), Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes) and Mitch Evans (Jaguar) also have high hopes. With the exception of Vergne, all drivers have already won at least one E-Prix in 2022.

The Frenchman travels to New York with tailwind from his first WEC race with Peugeot in Monza and is highly motivated, also thanks to previous successes at the “Big Apple”. However, if previous E-Prix are anything to go by, the narrow New York circuit could be more of a boon for Jaguar Racing. In addition to Evans, Sam Bird, who has won several times in New York, should not be underestimated in the “big cat”.

We are looking forward to an exciting weekend with two races that could already set the course for the title fight. There are no clear favorites – so there can be surprises!

By the way: Our readers also have one this season free community betting round organized. If you want to take part, you have until the weekend to give your first tips or to register again!
