World Challenge America Series: More than 130 cars on track in Sonoma this weekend

Thursday April 14, 2022 by Eliane Gilain

This weekend will be the official start of almost all of the SRO (Stéphane Ratel Organization) North American series, at Sonoma Raceway in California. More than 130 cars are expected on the track, divided between the GT World Challenge for GT3, GT4 America, TC America and GT America cars.

The GT4 America series is once again the most hotly contested with 41 cars on the entry list. Among the 82 drivers (crews of 2 drivers per car) who will be on track during the two races on the program, there are 5 Canadians who will take the wheel during the two rounds called SprintX.

Damon Surzyshyn will drive a Fast Track Racing BMW M4 GT4 with Gregory Liefooghe, while Ontario’s Gavin Sanders, as we announced here, will take part in his first GT4 America event with Michai Stephens at Conquest Racing. Veteran Aaron Povoledo will share the wheel of an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 with Ross Chouest, while Alex Filsinger will be on track with Rob Walker at Auto Technic Racing (BMW M4 GT4).

Finally, Torontonian Kyle Marcelli will race with amateur driver Chris Gumprecht on a RENNNtech Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4. Check out the full entry list here, along with the GT4 America Series schedule for the entire weekend.

Three classes will be grouped into TC America, namely TCX, TCA and TC. It is in the latter that the Canadian PJ Groenke will shine again on a Mini Cooper of Team Mini JCW. Discover the complete schedule here as well as the list of the 31 registered here.

For its part, the GT World Challenge series attracted the fewest entries with 19 cars. We note all the same that this is an increase compared to previous seasons when the series was in the shadow of the IMSA GTD scrapyard in terms of interest for teams with cars to GT3 standards.

Among the newcomers in this class, we find the Canadian team ST Racing which will be on the track in California with a new BMW M4 GT3 entrusted to the Ontarian Samantha Tan and the Quebecer Nick Wittmer. This will be the team’s first GT3 race in the GT World Challenge America series, after Tan, Wittmer and their teammates won the 24H Series race in Italy last month.

Misha Goikhberg will be the other only Canadian on track with K-Pax Racing in a Lamborghini Huracan GT3. Check out the GT World Challenge schedule here.

Finally, the GT America series will be on track, and will present two Sprint events with a grouping of GT3 and GT4 cars. About 30 cars are expected in this series, which has already had its start to the season in the streets of St-Petersburg, in support of IndyCar at the end of February.
