“A man needs a garden and a library to be happy.”
Cicero
It falls on April 23 World Book and Copyright Daya literary celebration organized by UNESCO that aims to promote reading, editing and the protection of intellectual property.
The idea of celebrating this day was born in Catalonia in 1926, its initiator was one of the local book publishers. Initially, it was planned to tie it to Cervantes’ birthday, but it was finally set on April 23, thus commemorating the anniversary of his death and that of William Shakespeare, the undisputed masters of the written word.
UNESCO also contributed to strengthening the importance of this day by creating the title of World Book Capital. This is a distinction for cities that show particular commitment to promoting books and reading. The first city to receive this distinction was Madrid. This year’s Book Capital is Strasbourg. In 2016 it was Wrocław.
World Book and Copyright Day is not only an opportunity to celebrate literature and the work of writers, but also to reflect on the importance of reading.
It is worth emphasizing that regular reading of books helps develop language skills, expand vocabulary and improve communication skills. Moreover, reading stimulates imagination and creativity, allows us to travel to fictional or historical worlds, learn about various perspectives and develop empathy. It is also a great way to relax and unwind, while also providing the opportunity for continuous learning and self-improvement.
We constantly encourage you to read, including in our READ-LIKE series, in which we recommend titles available on the shelves of Książnica Pruszkowska. Throughout the year, you can also participate in various forms of promoting reading and writing, e.g. book fairs, meetings with authors, literary competitions, common reading on the grass, National Reading and online campaigns.
