World Alzheimer’s Day Events and Activities in Harderwijk

Dementia is the name for a combination of symptoms in which the brain can no longer process information properly. Dementia is a collective name for more than five brain diseases.

September 21, 2023 is World Alzheimer’s Day again. A theme day on which extra attention is drawn to dementia worldwide. Various activities are also organized in Harderwijk.

Theme evening “Dementia affects us all”

As part of World Alzheimer’s Day, Leerhuis is organizing an evening about dementia. In the Netherlands there are approximately 290,000 people with dementia. That number will grow to more than half a million in 2040. This means that almost everyone will be affected by dementia. Dementia affects us all.

During the meeting they discuss:

How do we view people with dementia? How do we deal with them? How can we as a church be of significance to them and their loved ones? How do we deal with letting go and loss? And tips are given about dealing with people with dementia. This evening is provided by Frieda Meijers (senior pastor) and Saskia de Jonge (working at Alzheimer Nederland).

High Tea – together at the table

As part of World Alzheimer’s Day, a High Tea with tasty snacks and music and dance is being organised. In good weather on the Albert Verweijplein and in bad weather in De Aanleg. Alderman Maarten Reckman will open the High Tea at 2 p.m. Come by and have a bite to eat. For everyone with dementia and their informal caregivers or caregivers. Come to the High Tea!

Theme evening moving along with people with dementia – In conversation with Terri van Ommen

The Odensehuis Harderwijk organizes a special theme evening about moving with people with dementia. In an interactive interview with Jack van Zundert, Terri van Ommen combines her personal experiences with her professional background as a complementary therapist and trainer. Terri: “I am convinced that with my contribution I can be a valuable addition to everyone who is dealing with dementia.”

Van Ommen (59) previously recorded a podcast with program maker Erik van Prouiven (Eén Nooit) to inspire others who have a loved one with dementia. She can relate to people with dementia like no other. Terri, who has largely recovered from non-congenital brain damage, has been intensively caring for and guiding her own mother with vascular dementia for several years, but also has a lot to do with guiding others professionally.

From September 25, 2023, the Odensehuis Harderwijk will expand its opening hours to three days from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
