HELMOND Thursday, September 21 was World Alzheimer’s Day. A day on which attention was paid to dementia and its impact. People with dementia, their informal caregivers and companions came together in the EDAH Museum and Barrel Organ Museum to enjoy a relaxing program.
Participants of World Alzheimer’s Day 2023 look back on a fun, fascinating and relaxing day. The program started at 11 am with a welcome speech by Francien van de Ven, also known as the dementia enthusiast of Helmond, followed by councilor Marita van Lierop. Her speech clearly showed that it is important for the Municipality of Helmond that residents become aware of the fact that more and more people are living with dementia and that every resident will be affected by this directly or indirectly. The 90 participants were then divided into three groups and on rotation there was a tour of the EDAH museum, coffee/tea and cake with explanation at the Barrel Organ Museum and a lunch on the program. Around half past three the end was in sight and there were drinks in the Barrel Organ Museum, after which participants left World Alzheimer’s Day with a real goodie bag (filled with all kinds of information about dementia).
Dementia-friendly Helmond organized various suitable activities this year, both free and for a small contribution, for people with dementia, their informal caregivers and anyone who is interested. Dementia-friendly municipality of Helmond looks back on exciting and eventful activities in which dementia was often brought to the attention of residents of Helmond.
The last activity around World Alzheimer’s Day will take place on Friday, September 29 at 8:15 PM at Het Speelhuis. Minoux’s interactive theater performance POW WOW is on the program there. This performance shows how to care for our elderly (with dementia). What do we learn from them? What do we learn from other cultures?
