KOMPAS.com – Every December 1 is celebrated as World AIDS Day.

Every year, the United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) carries a different theme.

Theme for World AIDS Day 2023

Quoting from the official UNAIDS website, In 2023, World AIDS Day will carry the theme “Let Communities Lead”.

The message to be conveyed is that the role of world communities in campaigning about the dangers and effects of AIDS is believed to be able to reduce the number of AIDS sufferers.

Community organizations living with, at risk of, or impacted by HIV are at the forefront of progress in the HIV response.

Communities can also act as a bridge to society so that it is hoped that a message can reach ordinary people.

World AIDS Day is more than just a celebration of community achievements but a call to action to activate and support communities in their leadership roles.

World AIDS Day 2023 will also highlight efforts to unleash the full leadership potential of society to end AIDS.

History of AIDS Day

AIDS is a deadly disease that can be transmitted from one human to another through physical contact such as having sex.

In 2022, at least around 630,000 people will die from AIDS-related illnesses worldwide.

World AIDS Day reminds the public and government that HIV has not disappeared and a cure has not been found.

According to National Today, World AIDS Day began when two people named James Bunn and Thomas Netter, as public relations at the World Health Organization (WHO), proposed commemorating AIDS Day to the Director of Global Programs.

World AIDS Day was then declared December 1 by WHO. This date was chosen because it coincided with the Christmas holidays and after the end of the United States elections at that time so it was hoped that it would get attention from western media.

World AIDS Day was then taken over by UNAIDS as a UN agency in 1996 to expand the dissemination of networks and information to the world in a wider scope.
