World AIDS Daya is celebrated on December 1 every year. This day is celebrated to increase public awareness, as well as provide support for people with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).
On the occasion of World Aids Day 2023, the theme taken is ‘Let Communities Lead‘. Communities affected by HIV/AIDS themselves are an important part of progressing the HIV response.
Since 1988, various communities have moved together on this day to show solidarity against the stigma of HIV and remember those who have died from this sexually transmitted disease.
The theme adopted for World AIDS Day this year implies the importance of these communities to take the lead in handling various problems related to HIV/AIDS.
Quoting from the official website of the World Health Organization (WHO), mobile communities provide support services, prevention, testing and treatment, health promotion, monitoring policies, and holding service providers accountable.
“The world can end AIDS if communities take the lead,” says the WHO website.
The theme of World AIDS Day 2023 is more than just a celebration of the achievements of a community or society, but also a call to empower and support communities in their leadership roles.

The movements or activities carried out in the framework of World AIDS Day include:
1. Worldwide awareness raising activities.
2. People wear red ribbons, a universal symbol of awareness, support and solidarity towards PLWHA/PLHIV.
3. People with HIV voice opinions about important issues in their lives.
4. The involvement of PLHIV groups and civil society organizations in responding to AIDS to mobilize support and raise funds, could also be an activity carried out in the context of World AIDS Day 2023.
