NEWPORT, Ore. – Lincoln County Public Health invites you to join us for the first annual World AIDS Day march on December 1st from 12:00 to 1:00 pm at the Newport City Hall. This event will be a celebration for people living with HIV and AIDS and an opportunity for the community to learn more about the support resources available to protect themselves from HIV.

This year’s event will include a brief introduction to the history of World AIDS Day, presentations from community leaders, a goodie bag, and conclude with a short walk starting at Newport City Hall. We encourage community members to join us on December 1stst for a day of remembrance, celebration and education.

World AIDS Day takes place on 1st of December of each year. This day is an opportunity for communities to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses. First observed in 1988, World AIDS Day became the first recognized world public health day.

Each year a theme is chosen and this year the theme is Equalize, a term that captures the work being done to address inequalities in access to HIV screening, testing and treatment, and preventive care.

Early detection of HIV helps save lives and prevent new infections, and treatment prolongs the lives of people living with HIV. Furthermore, transmission of HIV through sexual contact poses no risk to those who maintain an undetectable viral load through consistent medication adherence.

The Oregon Health Authority estimates that there are currently 8,044 people living with HIV in Oregon, with 13.5 percent (1,087) of people unaware of their HIV status. Transmission is more likely to occur when people are unaware of their status.

Lincoln County Harm Reduction offers free, non-judgmental services to prevent HIV transmission:

  • Rapid HIV test
  • Referrals to suppliers of PrEP, a drug that can prevent HIV infection
  • HIV/STI treatment provider referrals
  • Condoms and lube to prevent transmission
  • Syringe disposal and exchange
