Works by Abraham Valdelomar are declared National Cultural Heritage (1914-1921)

Accepting a request from the National Library of Peru (BNP), five bibliographic units written by Abraham Valdelomar Pinto, between the years 1914 and 1921, were declared National Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, through the Vice Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Industries Cultural.

Said works belong to five first editions of the academic production of the outstanding writer from Ica, which are under the custody of the first cultural institution of independent Peru. In addition, according to a study carried out by the Directorate for the Protection of Collections of the BNP, they present great relevance, importance, value and meaning for the culture of our country.

The bibliographic units are: “La Mariscala: doña Francisca Zubiaga y Bernales de Gamarra” (1914), “El Caballero Carmelo” (1918), “Belmonte, the tragic: essay of a future aesthetic” (1918), “The children of the sun” (1921) and “Heroic triptych: invocation to the homeland, Flag, wing of victory!, Prayer to San Martín: patriotic poems dedicated to the children of the schools of Peru” (1921).

These correspond to stories, essays, books and historical poems that contain singularities or unique characteristics that differentiate them from other copies, allowing us to know their history and origin. They have autographs and dedications from Abraham Valdelomar to Ricardo Palma, Raúl Porras Barrenechea and José María Euguren. In addition, they have annotations made by Manuel Beltroy and exlibris by Raúl Porras Barrenechea.

After the promulgation of Vice Ministerial Resolution No. 000098-2023-VMPCI/MC that declares them Cultural Patrimony of the Nation, the BNP will be in charge of coordinating and managing the protection, conservation and dissemination of these bibliographic units. Abraham Valdelomar Pinto was born on April 27, 1888, in Ica and at an early age he moved with his entire family to the port of Pisco. He was a writer, poet, journalist, cartoonist, essayist and playwright.

They appointed him director of the official newspaper A Peruvian man (1913), later he founded the literary magazine colony (1916) where he published his book of short stories The Knight Carmel (1918) thus marking the beginning of modernity in Peruvian narrative.

Valdelomar was a complete writer since he covered practically all the known literary genres, the best of his fictional creation being the short story. His poetry is also notable for its evolution from modernism to postmodernism, approaching the avant-garde. He died in Ayacucho on November 3, 1919.

The material “Album of Peruvian art motifs” was also declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation by the Ministry of Culture. This work is considered one of the pioneers of its kind, as far as the dissemination of pre-Columbian iconography is concerned in our country.

It contains 12 color illustrations by the well-known Peruvian cartoonist and cartoonist Pedro Challe Aguilar (1882-1959), which correspond to materials such as: ceramics, textiles, metallurgical pieces from cultures on our coast, from Chicama to Nasca and Acari.
