The Algerian-Austrian political consultations were held on February 7, 2023 in Vienna, under the co-chairmanship of Mr. Amar BELANI, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad and Mr. Peter LAUNSKY-TIFFENTHAL, Secretary General of the Austrian Ministry for Europe and International Affairs.
This session of political consultations, which marked the resumption of high-level bilateral contacts due in particular to the COVID-19 pandemic, made it possible to address the state of relations, just as on this occasion a large exchange of views on international and regional issues of common interest.
At the bilateral level, it was agreed to promote cooperation in the various fields of activity, in particular those of transport, agriculture and vocational training, as well as Austrian direct investment in Algeria, in order to raise it to level of the excellent political relations that the two countries have always maintained and of their respective potential, at a time when they are celebrating the 60e anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations.
With regard to international issues, the two parties, who exchanged views on the latest developments in international crises, in particular those inherent in their immediate neighborhood (Russia-Ukraine, Western Sahara, Mali, Libya, Sahel, Middle- East…), highlighted the need to prioritize the peaceful settlement of disputes and respect for international law and multilateralism, just as they addressed issues related to the fight against terrorism, disarmament and the migration issue.
Mr. BELANI also had talks during his visit to Vienna with Mrs. Barbara KAUDEL-JENSEN, Diplomatic Advisor to the Austrian Federal Chancellor, with whom an exchange of views took place on the means of consolidating and diversifying the field of bilateral cooperation. The two Parties also agreed to maintain high-level political contacts and pursue dialogue on current international issues.
The Secretary General also spoke with the Chairman of the North Africa parliamentary friendship group at the Austrian National Council, Mr Nico MARCHETTI. During this meeting, which enabled the two officials to recall the complementary nature of parliamentary diplomacy, Mr. BELANI informed his interlocutor of the forthcoming installation of the Algeria-Austria parliamentary friendship group, under the current legislature 2021-2026. For his part, Mr. MARCHETTI expressed the desire of the friendship group he chairs to strengthen ties and exchanges of visits between the parliamentary institutions of the two countries, just as he stressed the need to promote spaces for dialogue to work for the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
