Working Hours Regulations in the Civil Service Law and New Labor Law

The Civil Service Law specified the number of working hours per week for government and private sector employees, with a period ranging from 35 to 42 hours per week, provided that that period is reduced by an hour for a number of categories according to what is stipulated in the internal regulations.

Masrawy monitors the most prominent articles of the Civil Service Law and the new Labor Law, which regulate the duration of work for workers in the private and government sectors, which came as follows:

Article 45 of the Civil Service Law states that the competent authority must determine the working days and times of the week and distribute the number of hours according to the requirements of the public interest, provided that the number of working hours per week is not less than 35 hours and not more than 42 hours.

Article 131 of the executive regulations of the Civil Service Law stipulates that the daily working hours shall be reduced by an hour for each of the following:
1- An employee with a disability.
2- An employee who has a child with a disability, according to a decision issued by the medical council concerned with this disability.
3- An employee who breastfeeds her child until he reaches two years of age.
4- The pregnant employee, starting from the sixth month.
The new labor law, which the House of Representatives will start discussing during the fourth session, also specifies the cases in which it is permissible to reduce working hours and rest periods for workers, which are:
The maximum working hours may be reduced for some categories of workers, or in some industries or businesses determined by the decision of the competent minister.
3- The working hours include one or more periods for eating and resting, the total of which shall not be less than an hour. Determining this period, the worker shall not work for more than five consecutive hours.
