The rural women in the Freiburg district advocate fair pay, independence and a strong network.
. In 1971, the merger of the Breisach and Freiburg areas resulted in the rural women’s district of Freiburg. In its anniversary year, the association has around 3200 members in 32 local associations from the Rhine to the Black Forest. The 44-year-old district chairwoman Christiane Wangler reports that the work and concerns of rural women have lost none of their importance within half a century.
Education and training for women in rural areas were at the beginning of the district association’s history. “The founders, Anneliese Salwey from Oberrotweil and Ilse Stiefel from Opfingen, initially campaigned for women to learn to swim,” says Christiane Wangler. And this was done with the emphasis peculiar to rural women. Not least the construction of the Eugen-Keidel-Bad, which opened its doors in 1979, is at least partly thanks to Ilse Stiefel.
