Workers’ Voice on Call for Boycott of Indomaret Products

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Some Labour Union have different views on the call of the Indonesian Metal Workers Union Federation (FSPMI) to boycott PT Indomarco Prismatama products (Indomaret) due to the alleged criminalization of their union member, Anwar Bessy.

The Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPI), for example, stated that they are ready to take part in the boycott of Indomaret products as soon as the signal is given by FSPMI. Because, KSPI prioritizes solidarity between workers, especially for workers who are victims of corporate criminalization.

“As solidarity among fellow workers, solidarity actions of other KSPI members will also be carried out to support the struggle against the criminalization of FSPMI workers who are struggling to demand THR and lead to the threat of imprisonment,” said KSPI President Said Iqbal to CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (18/5).

Said explained that KSPI has started to disseminate the boycott plan to its members. The socialization was given as a notification while waiting for the continuation of Anwar’s case in court.

In contrast, the Association of Indonesian Trade Unions (Aspect) will not automatically boycott Indomaret products. The reason is, so far there has been no formal invitation from FSPMI President Riden Hatam Aziz.

“We have not made a decision because Bung Riden himself has not asked for support from other trade union or labor federations, including the Aspect personally and officially. So Aspect has not taken a boycott position,” said Indonesian Aspect President Mirah Sumirat.

Even if FSPMI has asked for boycott support, continued Mirah, the workers in the Indonesian Aspect must first hold a joint meeting. This is in line with the decision-making mechanisms and attitudes that apply in the association.

“We will decide on this matter, boycott or not, participate or not, this must go through or go through the internal mechanisms of the Indonesian Aspect itself. So we have to go through leadership meetings, board meetings, so the decision is taken collectively collegially together. Later whatever the result will be the attitude of the Indonesian aspect, “he explained.

Even so, Mirah emphasized that the Indonesian Aspect certainly still supports the resolution of cases of alleged criminalization of FSPMI workers. This is because the Indonesian aspect still has the value of solidarity with fellow workers who are victims of criminalization.

“Of course this solidarity is in the vision and mission and certainly on the line of our struggle in the trade unions, regardless of which union,” he said.

Previously, FSPMI President Riden Hatam Aziz issued a boycott call because their union member, Anwar Bessy, was brought to the realm of law after destroying the company’s gypsum when collecting payment for the 2020 holiday allowance (THR).

He admitted that he was disappointed with the company’s management for criminalizing Anwar for trivial matters, even though Anwar was claiming his right to pay the THR.
