Workers in the fishing sector are threatening to strike in May – Jornal OPaís

After meeting in the Senate, the strike was unanimously accepted by the workers, who are under the supervision of the Ministry of Fisheries, with the hope that their demands will be fulfilled.

The first phase of the strike will be between the 6th and 10th of May, and, until that date, the union committee will be on hand for negotiations. “After this period, if the demands of the brochure are not negotiated, the workers will enter the second phase of the strike, which will last from June 17 to June 1 (15 days). In the third phase, the strike will be extended for one month, from July 22 to August 22”, he said.

The conference was also marked by the presence of former fishing workers, who have not received their retirement pension for more than 15 years, a subject which is also one of the main points of the demands the union forwarded.

The members of the union committee also said that they have suffered threats and persecution for fighting and demanding their rights as workers. It should be noted that the application book was presented in September 2023, and discussions were held over three months.

During this time, according to the union spokesperson, there was no agreement between the parties, which ended with this strike declaration. In addition to the members of the Union Committee at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, the secretary for administration and finance of UNTA, Adriano dos Santos, and a representative of MAPTESS were present at the conference.
