Workers at Bonini Mine in Houaïlou Return to Work after Conflict Resolution

Employees and contract workers returned to their jobs this Tuesday morning in Houaïlou at the Bonini mine in Poro. Since August 19, activity on the site had been suspended with, in the background, a conflict between the traditionalists and the SLN.

Workers from SMP – the Poro Mine Company – had been deprived of pay for several weeks in the commune of Houaïlou. In question, the blocking of the Bonini site by a customary association in conflict with the SLN. Activities resumed this Tuesday, October 10.

The mobilization of staff last week helped resolve the situation. The staff representative, Richard Moinburu explains the situation: ÇWe’ve still been unemployed for a month and a half. We are on contract suspension, which means we do not receive a salary. We had to be able to make ourselves heard, as it is a customary closure. If it hadn’t been for this mobilization, I think we would still be at a standstill.”

Since mid-August, access has been closed by the Kuneka customary association, a group which represents the tribes of Kua, Newa and Kamoui. Dince the start of the conflict, the financial impact has amounted to more than 250 million francs.
