Workers and Activists Rally for Safe Jobs Act to Protect Employee Rights

Dozens of workers and activists are gathering in Manhattan to demand that the City Council pass the Safe Jobs Act, which would prohibit employers from firing workers without just cause.

People who have been unjustly fired hope that the Mayor’s Office will not commit again what they describe as arbitrariness. They want city leaders to pass the safe jobs bill.

Leading today’s demonstration is the organization Make the Road New York. They say this law will provide basic labor rights, establish just cause protections for all city workers.

Activists say bad employers have long used at-will employment to their advantage. Under that system they can fire employees at any time without reason. There are protections against discrimination and against retaliation, but according to advocates they are difficult to enforce.
