Worker fell in Genoa, the gap was covered by a wooden beam

(ANSA) – GENOA, 04 OCT – The elevator shaft from which Marco Ricci, the 39-year-old worker who was the victim of an accident at work yesterday, fell, was covered by an unsecured wooden board. The plank fell as soon as the worker put his foot on it, causing it to fall over 10 metres. This is what emerged from the first inspection by the public prosecutor Giuseppe Longo together with the deputy Francesco Pinto and the ASL3 inspectors. The prosecutor’s office has opened a case, currently against unknown persons, and seized the construction site. The investigators want to understand why the gap was not cordoned off and covered adequately and also why there were no other protections. And whether all the rules to guarantee the safety of workers have been respected. The investigators have acquired all the documentation to reconstruct the contract and subcontract chain. The works were awarded by the Municipality of Genoa to a company which then subcontracted to two other “twin” companies: one specialized in construction work and the other in carpentry work. Ricci was carrying a metal grid with a colleague while working on the construction site of the toy library next to the area where the Memorial for the victims of the collapse of the Morandi Bridge will be built. He was walking backwards when he stepped onto the beam which gave way. (HANDLE).
