In fact, the pre-election slogan of the GERB party – “Work, work, work” – is extremely appropriate for this party, if we think of the literary source from which it was stolen, probably without realizing it. The original is in Vonnegut’s Cat Swing. “Work, work, work” is the universal explanation of the followers of the robber angel Boconon, when mysterious things happen in their republic of San Lorenzo. The spell is uttered thoughtfully and with a sigh.
I think that the followers of our robber angels have found in this way the perfect explanation of all the mysterious and incomprehensible to them things that happen in our country. It only remains to work out this technique to perfection in the time remaining until the election.
For instance:
Question – How did Bulgaria manage to catch up and overtake Italy in terms of overall mortality from the pandemic (this happened yesterday), after a year ago the Italians had overtaken us several thousand times?
Answer – Work, work, Job (plus a sigh) …
Question – How would you explain the fact that a year ago you broke benches in the parks to protect us from infection, and now in ten days you open and close restaurants?
Answer – Work, work, work …
Question – From the beginning of the year until today in Bulgaria have been given an average of 4590 vaccines per day. At this rate in 2871 days we will be able to vaccinate (with two doses, as it should) the entire Bulgarian population. The date of this event will be exactly January 31, 2029. Won’t it be a little late?
Answer – Work, work, work …
The trick works in almost all cases when awkward questions are asked. Perhaps the only exception is the question contained in the title of Boconon’s 14th book, which, paraphrased to correspond to our reality, should sound like this:
“What is the hope for the future of Bulgaria if GERB continues to govern us as in the last 12 years?”
In this case, “Work, work, work” does not work. But the very content of Boconon’s 14th book gives us a perfect answer. It is relatively short – it consists of a word and a dot.
“None.”
In general, the use of Vonnegut’s work in the election campaign (albeit probably semi-consciously) is a great achievement of the ruling party. I would allow myself one piece of advice – it gives other possibilities through which to adequately describe our reality and the role of GERB in it. For example, “The big problem with dumb bastards is that they’re too dumb to believe that there’s a way to be smart.” It, of course, describes us all.
I do not want from what I have written here to conclude that the party leaders from GERB do not love their people. But, as Vonnegut says in another of his works, Farce or Never Loneliness Again, we need less love and more good treatment.
And so on, as Vonnegut would say in a third of his works.
