work on the Aubervilliers training pool can resume

Construction work on the training pool for the athletes of the Paris-2024 Olympics located in Aubervilliers will be able to resume. This Tuesday, November 23, the Paris administrative court of appeal lifted the suspension of the building permit.

The judges have ruled. In a press release, the Paris Administrative Court of Appeal confirmed the resumption of work. “The summary judge granted the request of the municipality of Aubervilliers and lifted the effects of the suspension he ordered on September 20, as well as the injunction to end the work concerned. The work of the aquatic center can therefore legally resume “, clarified the administrative justice.

This court, competent to settle disputes related to the Olympic Games, felt that it had obtained sufficient pledges from the City of Aubervilliers, carrier of this future equipment which will be accessible to the general public after the world sporting event.

The restaurant project was abandoned in favor of a “fitness and well-being space”

The city of Aubervilliers after the suspension of work, proposed an amending building permit and changes in the project, starting with the removal of a restaurant annexed to the swimming pool, now removed in favor of a “fitness and well-being space”.

The construction of the swimming pool would destroy 4,000 m2 of allotment gardens

For those opposed to the project, these changes are still considered insufficient. Three gardeners and two associations for the defense of the environment are at the initiative of the emergency procedure against the project, which involves the destruction of around 4000 m2 of plots of allotment gardens, which are around a hundred years old.

They also denounce the artificialization of soils in an already densely populated area and demand a complete revision of the project, including the solarium which encroaches on the vegetable gardens.

The green light granted to the site “is the demonstration that Olympic law, which is above all else, sacrifices the quality of life of the populations concerned”, deplores Jean-Marie Baty, president of MNLE 93 (National Movement for the Fight for the Environment).

A project estimated at 33 million euros

The legal turmoil has another impact on the swimming pool, which is engaged in a speed race. To be stamped an Olympic book, it must fit into the already tight schedule. Otherwise, it will be impossible to claim subsidies from Solideo (the company responsible for delivering the works for the Olympics-2024), which must pay a third of the 33 million euros needed for its construction.

For its part, the Paris-2024 Organizing Committee (Cojo) is advancing cautiously on this file, ensuring that the swimming pool will be used if it is ready. Otherwise, another solution would be found, he says. In March, the Noisy-le-Sec Olympic swimming pool project fell through, immediately replaced by the Montreuil swimming pool as a training site.
