A motorist has found two valuable, approximately 350-year-old oil paintings in a waste container along the highway in Germany. These are ‘Portrait of a boy’ by the Dutch Rembrandt pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627-1678) and ‘Laughing self-portrait’, a work from 1665 by the Italian artist Pietro Bellotti.

The Cologne police showed photos of the artworks on Friday. The 64-year-old motorist had found the cloths a month ago and handed it over to the police. An expert consulted believes they are the original paintings. The corps asks people who know how or why they were dumped at the resting place Ohrenbach Ost along the A7 to report. The police also want to know who the owner is.
