One of the two workers, Yan Baillargeon, is 39 years old. The identity of the second victim is not known until now. While the City of Windsor announced the two deaths in a press release early Wednesday evening, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) and Domtar only confirm, for the moment, the death of Mr. Baillargeon. The police still say they are looking for the second worker, without specifying whether he is dead.
“All our thoughts and sympathies go out to the members of Mr. Yan Baillargeon’s family and to the colleagues affected by this tragic accident,” Domtar said in a press release.
The incident occurred around 1:35 a.m. in the paper mill in Estrie, on the night of Monday to Tuesday. Two victims remained trapped under the debris caused by the collapse of a multi-story scaffolding.
Tuesday afternoon, the victims were located. A few hours later, the Sûreté du Québec indicated that the rescue teams were still trying to establish contact with the two people. Another worker injured in the incident was taken to hospital and was in a safe condition.
The two workers would not be Domtar employees, but rather contractors who were involved in major maintenance work at the plant.
The SQ investigation and that of the Commission for Standards, Equity, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST) are still underway to shed light on the events.
