Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has been awarded a $2 million grant to build an Autonomous Systems Laboratory. The lab will focus on testing and developing unmanned prototypes in collaboration with the US Department of Defense. The research at the Autonomous Systems Laboratory will use the latest technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality. These technologies will be developed at the WPI building on Sagamore Road. Meanwhile, the lab’s computing and networking equipment will be housed on the third floor of the Prescott Street building.
The grant for the laboratory was provided by the Technology and Innovation Ecosystem Awards Program, which supports research-oriented projects. This program is led by the MassTech Collaborative Innovation Institute, a publicly funded agency focused on advancing the technology and innovation economy.
The creation of WPI’s Autonomous Systems Laboratory marks a major milestone in unmanned ground vehicle research. It is the first academically-led research and development organization investigating such vehicles to receive federal-level support. Lab findings and developments will be shared with academia, defense industry, transportation agencies and advanced manufacturers.
