Woody Allen: Riverside Drive. Jiří Ornest, Jiří Lábus and Vilma Cibulková in a black comedy about problems with a lover

Failed screenwriter Jim is waiting for his lover to tell her that he wants to end their relationship. Fred, a homeless man, joins him on the deserted waterfront. A bankrupt advertising slogan writer showing signs of schizophrenia asks disturbing questions: “Who will decide what is real? Are we particles or rays? When we enter a black hole and the laws of physics are suspended, will I still need a suspender?” But he doesn’t stop at questions. It turns out that Fred has been following Jim for a long time.

Riverside Drive is a major thoroughfare in western Manhattan. It basically replicates the Hudson River and stretches from 72nd Street practically all the way to the George Washington Bridge at 181st Street. In its vicinity, we can find sought-after “good addresses”, and many filmmakers have located some of the scenes of their films here.

Woody Allen, a well-known lover of New York, also placed the plot of his briefcase full of ironic bon mots and funny paradoxes on the banks of the Hudson, in an unfriendly rainy evening. And he even put the name of this street in its name.

The story in which a crazy homeless man unexpectedly intervenes in the love life of an unsuccessful screenwriter was written by Woody Allen in 1995. The play premiered together with his other briefcase Old Saybrook at The Atlantic Theater Company in New York in March 2003 under his own direction.
