During the autumn holidays, the Clap entertainment team (Puy-l’Évêque leisure and entertainment center) organized, at the invitation of the CAF (family allowance fund) and the community of communes of the Lot Valley and the vineyard, a woodworking discovery course, from October 23 to 27. The location of this workshop called “Philaos” is located in the industrial zone of Meymes de Prayssac, every morning, eleven young people aged 9 to 13 took the minibuses of the community of communes to get there.
This Philaos workshop specializes in furniture recycling; it also serves as a reintegration site for unemployed women. The furniture that they repair and renovate then goes back to the market. Our Clapiens therefore immersed themselves in the world of carpentry, nourishing themselves at midday sometimes with a picnic eaten on site or with a meal taken at the Clap premises after a return by minibus (the 3 km distance made it possible not to wasting too much time.)
Between discovering carpentry equipment, cutting and painting, they found time to make a spinning top and a wooden spoon under the direction of the workshop manager. They also benefited from the intervention of representatives of the Carrefour des sciences who made them aware of biodiversity; which allowed young people to assimilate the knowledge necessary to make a bird nest box and to know where to install them.
The Clapiens were therefore the first to benefit from this activity and as it proved very positive, it will be extended to other centers during the short holidays. Indeed, the experience clearly delighted the young people who were able to develop their manual skills and their creative sense, while instilling in them respect for birds. On the last day, after discovering the usefulness of a wood lathe, they were able to take home the nest boxes they had made. Clap facilitator Pierre Veyssie and board member Guy Suarez (also a great wood specialist) supervised the trainees in collaboration with recycling volunteers.
