The red jersey of the overall leader of the 75th Tour of Spain was successfully defended by Richard Carapaz from Ecuador one day after the first day of rest. With 18 seconds, the 2019 Giro winner is ahead of the British Hugh Carthy. Last year’s Slovenian winner Primoz Roglic ranks fourth, 30 seconds behind Carapaz.
Halfway through the route, a leading group of 35 riders had formed, from which five riders with the eventual winner of the day Woods at the top on the last mountain of the day 21 kilometers from the finish line. Among other things, it was thanks to the speed dictation of the four-time Tour de France and two-time Vuelta winner Chris Froome from the Ineos Grenadiers team that the group with Froome team-mate Carapaz was not too far behind and Red was defended. Before the start, the organizers announced that the 684 corona tests carried out on drivers and employees were all negative.
The German team Bora-hansgrohe had to survive a moment of shock after the Australian Jay McCarthy fell on a sloping track after about 100 kilometers and landed in a field. The team mate of the German top sprinter Pascal Ackermann was consciously transported away and had to end the race. The eighth stage on Wednesday starts in Logroño and ends after 164 kilometers with a mountain finish on the Alto de Moncalvillo at an altitude of 1489 meters.
