Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Recently there was a report that a woman gave birth to a baby with antibodies against the Covid-19 virus.
The woman had previously been infected with the coronavirus in March when she was pregnant. This seems to open new clues as to whether the infection can be passed from mother to child.
The baby was born this month without Covid-19 exposure but with viral antibodies, according to the Straits Times newspaper on Sunday (29/11).
“My doctor suspected I had transferred my Covid-19 antibodies to him during my pregnancy,” Celine Ng-Chan told the newspaper.
Ng-Chan became slightly ill with the disease and was discharged from the hospital after two and a half weeks. However, Ng-Chan and the National University Hospital (NUH), where she gave birth, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says it is currently not known whether a pregnant woman with Covid-19 can transmit the virus to her fetus or baby during pregnancy or childbirth.
Until now, the active virus has not been found in fluid samples around the baby in the womb or in breast milk.
Citing Reuters, doctors in China have reported detection and reduction of Covid-19 antibodies over time in babies born to women with coronavirus disease, according to an article published in October in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.
Mother-to-newborn transmission of the new coronavirus is rare, doctors from New York-Presbyterian / Columbia University Irving Medical Center reported in October in JAMA Pediatrics.
