With the presence of 152 athletes from 34 countries, this Friday the senior women’s saber World Cup began, organized by the Peruvian Fencing Sports Federation (FDPE) on behalf of the International Federation of this discipline, until Sunday the 11th. February at the Sports Center 3 in La Videna.
On the first day of individual competitions, our nine representatives, Darma Canal, María Karina Galindo, Aixa Álvarez, Domenica Albarrán, Katerina Farje, Kate Ann Lu, Mariam Olivieri, Nina Rosales and María Fernanda Tudela, competed in their fights, although only Galindo managed a victory.
This Saturday the medal disputes will take place and on Sunday the team competitions will take place.
“This World Cup puts us in the spotlight of world fencing, because the competition awards qualification points for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The first 16 in the world ranking advanced directly to the duels on Saturday where the medal fights will be played” said Jorge Canales, secretary of the Peruvian Fencing Sports Federation.
“On Sunday there will be the team competition, which is one of the most important, because only 8 countries will qualify for Paris 2024. That is why nations like Korea, Hungary, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Japan and Azerbaijan,” Canales added.
Among the most notable participants are the Greek Theodora Gkountoura (current world number 2), the Japanese Misaki Emura (3rd in the ranking) and Olga Kharlan from Ukraine, winner of four Olympic medals.
