Les Bleues, qualified for their first Olympics as host country, now know half of the teams who will stand in their way at Paris 2024 (July 26 – August 11). Six nations qualified after the three Olympic qualifying tournaments held this week.
The Americans, defending champions, will aim for the double after finishing at the top of Group C in Lodz, Poland. They will be accompanied by the Poles, who took full advantage of the advantage of playing at home to beat the Italian favorites, dominated 3-1 in the decisive match this Sunday evening.
The other two host countries were less fortunate. Japan only finished 3rd in Group B in Tokyo, behind Turkey, newly crowned European champion, and Brazil, Olympic vice-champion in 2021.
China, one of the major nations in women’s volleyball, finished only 4th in Group A in Ningbo. In this group, the elected are the Dominican Republic and Serbia, bronze medalist two years ago in Tokyo.
Still five places to take via the “ranking”
Those disappointed have one last chance to make up for it via the “ranking”, the ranking established by the International Federation (FIVB) following very complex procedures. The first five in this ranking in June 2024 will be qualified, taking into account the need to have at least one representative per continent. Currently, the highest placed not yet qualified are Italy (5th), China (6th), Japan (9th) and Kenya (21st) for Africa.
