Women’s rights movement challenges Bart De Wever: “Let parlem … (Antwerp)

Five ladies of the women’s rights movement Collecti.ef 8 maars have thrown the glove at mayor Bart De Wever (N-VA) as a symbolic action. They blame him for his negative stance on the relaxation of the abortion law and challenge him to let parliamentary debate not be used as a “change in government negotiation”.

According to the initial plan, the five members of the Collecti.ef 8 maars, which annually organizes a women’s strike on March 8, would hold their action close to the mayor’s temporary office in Hofstraat. That was not allowed and so they stepped with their gloves on their raised fists to Hendrik Conscienceplein and threw them off there.

“A symbolic action towards Bart De Wever as mayor and chairman of the largest Flemish party. We challenge him to let the democratic process decide on the relaxation of the abortion law and to vote in parliament, ”Ellen Verryt and Nadine Peeters (also a PVDA politician) explain the collective. “He suddenly uses this as a change in the negotiations, on the hood of the women.”

“It is not only a challenge, but also an invitation to better inform yourself. He might have to talk to women undergoing an abortion at the LUNA abortion center about why they should do that, ”say the two, who were supported for their action by feminist organizations Furia and the Women’s Council.

At the federal level, a discussion is underway about an amendment to the abortion law. Among other things, this should allow women to have an abortion up to eighteen weeks pregnant, instead of up to twelve weeks.
