The Mexican U-20 women’s team was eliminated from the Colombia 2024 World Cup after losing 3-2 to the United States in the round of 16.
In a very intense match, played yesterday at the Nemesio Camacho “El Campín” Stadium in Bogotá, the team with the stars and stripes took the lead (1-0) in just the 10th minute thanks to a shot from Pietra Adao Tordin inside the area; however, the Tri tied the score (1-1) in the 22nd minute thanks to a powerful cross shot from Valerie Vargas.
The pleasure did not last long for those led by Ana Galindo, because only five minutes later (27), the three-time champions of the category regained the advantage (2-1) thanks to a goal from outside the area by Ally Sentnor.
The tricolor team did not give up and balanced the scoreboard again (2-2) at 39, when Montserrat Saldívar sent a shot straight at the goal which was deflected by an opponent before shaking the nets.
At the start of the second half, it looked like the United States would take the lead again with another goal from Tordin, but it was ruled out for an offside by the player herself.
In the rest of the match, both teams had opportunities to score again, but neither could do any damage to their rival and the game had to be decided in extra time.
In the 97th minute of extra time, Jordynn Araya Dudley scored the 3-2 in favor of the Americans, who could have extended the lead a few moments later through Riley Jackson with a penalty kick, but Mexican goalkeeper Renatta Cota saved the shot. In the final stretch, the tricolors tried to rescue at least the tie to reach the penalty shootout; however, they did not achieve their objective and their bitter rival secured their pass to the quarterfinals of the World Cup, where they will continue their quest to win the title that they have not won since the 2012 edition.
