Women’s hockey: USA beat Canada 4-3 on penalties in Kelowna

Goaltender Nicole Hensley frustrated four Canadian shooters in the shootout and the United States won Tuesday night’s Rivalry Series Chapter 4-3 in Kelowna.

Alex Carpenter allowed the Americans to send the game to overtime when he grabbed a rebound and scored on the power play with 1:25 left.

Hannah Brandt late in the first period and Hilary Knight early in the second gave the visitors a 2-0 lead over the Canadians.

Not very opportunistic in the first twenty, having not exploited three power plays, Canada found its way to go towards the middle of the match.

Claire Thompson scored at 12:57 and captain Marie-Philip Poulin followed suit 62 seconds later. Time to tell, the counters between the great rivals of women’s hockey have reset.

Poulin completed a two-on-one run with another Quebecer, Élizabeth Giguère.

Emily Clark then gave the Canadians an option to win with a goal 6:25 into the final period, but the Americans never gave up.

Carpenter and Knight both managed to best Emerance Maschmeyer in the shootout.

On the Canadian side Brianne Jenner, Poulin, Giguère and Loren Gabel, in order, were stopped by Hensley.

Canadians won’t have to wait long to take their revenge; Seattle’s KeyArena, home of the Kraken, will be the scene of a new clash on November 20.
