Mexico City. Chivas sealed its pass to the group stage of the Clausura 2024 tournament of the Liga Mx Femenil by beating Cruz Azul 4-0 in a duel where Alicia Cervantes returned to score.
Now, in Joaquín Moreno’s debut as coach, after the abrupt departure of Antonio Spinelli, Guadalajara once again tasted victory after four games to reach 29 points in the fifth place, all at the expense of the bottom Cruz Azul.
It has been a perfect return for Cervantes. The striker returned to the starting lineup after recovering from an injury, she played her 200th game in the Liga Mx Femenil and reached 140 goals in the competition, just six less than the American Katty Martínez, the tournament’s all-time top scorer.
In front of a large crowd at the Akron stadium, Licha Cervantes was the first to unleash euphoria just after 17 minutes. Taking advantage of a rebound, the forward shot with her left foot and without a mark from the center of the area to shake the goal.
The goal sparked the red and whites’ offensive and just six minutes later they increased the score, when Adriana Iturbide beat the light blue goalkeeper in a one-on-one match.
The Machine could do little to counteract the damage, so the locals sealed the victory with goals from Dan Sandoval (67) and Rubi Soto (82).
