VfL Wolfsburg has suffered a serious setback in the fight for the title in the women’s Bundesliga. The cup winners lost the top game at Eintracht Frankfurt 0:3 (0:1) on Sunday.
After flying high in the Champions League with the clear victories against Florence, the Lower Saxony team have landed on earth in the league. The 3-0 loss against Frankfurt, which is now in second place in the table behind Bayern, who were victorious in Bremen, was completely okay.
For the “Wolves”, who had already dropped a point in the first game of the season against Werder, they are currently only in fifth place in the table. Next Friday (6.30 p.m.) VfL welcomes third-placed RB Leipzig.
VIDEO: Wolfsburg coach Stroot: This defeat hurts a lot (2 min)
Stroot: “I missed stability”
“We need a certain stability in order to be able to play top games like this again and again at the highest level. I missed this stability in various phases today, especially in the qualities that actually set us apart – in our grip in the duels, in ours Passing quality, in the simple things,” said VfL coach Tommy Stroot.
Frankfurt’s Anyomi cannot be stopped
The Wolfsburg women couldn’t find a way to attack the Hessians and, in particular, they couldn’t get Nicole Anyomi under control defensively. Sara Doorsoun gave the hosts the lead shortly before the half-time whistle with a hand penalty caused by Marina Hegering (45th + 1).

After the restart it only took 17 seconds before Anyomi increased the score to 2-0. Kathrin Hendrich hadn’t looked good before. Anyomi again scored in the 59th minute to make it 3-0 for Frankfurt, who were more determined and more confident than Wolfsburg.
If Frankfurt had not been so careless with their counterattack opportunities in the final phase, VfL’s defeat could have been even greater.
