Women’s Bundesliga continues season on May 29

As the first professional women’s league in Europe, the Bundesliga wants to continue its season interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic from May 29th.

As the German Football Association announced after a management meeting of the twelve first division teams, a winner should also be determined in the DFB Cup.

“The return of the women’s Bundesliga to the pitch is another important step towards a kind of normality in football as in society,” said DFB President Fritz Keller. The Bundesliga is playing a pioneering role in international women’s football.

Six match days are still to come, in the table the still unbeaten VfL Wolfsburg leads FC Bayern Munich and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The season finale is scheduled for June 28, 2020. The final in the DFB Cup is to take place on July 4th in Kln, beforehand the quarterfinals are to be played on June 2nd and 3rd and then on June 10th and 11th the semi-finals.

Points are at stake again on Friday next week from 2 p.m. with the encounter between the Wolfsburg women against 1. FC Kln, 1. FFC Frankfurt and SC Sand in the evening (7.15 p.m. / Eurosport and Magentasport) continue the 17th matchday. In a previous video slot, eleven out of twelve clubs had opted to continue playing. 1. “The continuation of the season is a strong signal for women’s football and the equal treatment of professional athletes,” said DFB Vice President Hannelore Ratzeburg in the message. Siggi Dietrich, the chairman of the DFB committee for the women’s federal leagues and manager of the 1st FFC Frankfurt, even called the restart a historic moment. He pointed out that “as the first European professional league for women under the greatest possible safety factors for players and the team around which the team can get back into the game operation”.

The restart of the women’s Bundesliga should be accompanied by strict hygiene requirements, close testing and continuous monitoring. The concept should only differ in organizational nuances from the concept for the two leagues of the DFL. In view of the smaller arenas, there should only be around 130 people in the stadium per game.
